Upstairs, Lashana leads Ariel into a guest room. She takes Ariel’s sailcloth and sits her down in something she calls a bathtub. The tub is cold against Ariel’s skin. Lashana didn’t explain what Ariel is supposed to do, but Ariel notices the tub looks sort of like a porcelain boat on land. Maybe it needs water?

Suddenly a bucket of steaming water is poured over her head. Ariel gasps in shock. That wasn’t quite what she was thinking. The tub is quickly filled with water far hotter than Ariel is used to. She wonders why humans would subject themselves to this. Lashana then steps away to help Rosa, a young housekeeper, prepare the rest of the room.

“She can’t speak at all?” Rosa asks with bewilderment in her voice.

“Can you blame her?” Lashana retorts. “After all she’s been through? It’s a blessing she’s not worse off.”

“Such a faraway look in her eyes.”

“A bit of soap and a scrub and she’ll be good as new.”

Ariel doesn’t know what soap is, but she isn’t sure she’d describe herself as very comfortable in this bath. She continues to scan the room, and she is shocked when her eyes lock onto a dead fish painted on the fireplace tiles. Her mind flashes back to the warnings Sebastian gave her. Ariel’s earlier excitement slowly starts to melt into a flutter of nerves. Where does she fit into this strange world?

“I need you to bring me the corset and the other underthings from the other room. Oh!” Lashana exclaims. “And bring me the blue dress as well.”

“Blue dress…I don’t remember a blue dress,” Rosa muses.

“Child, the blue dress that’s in your room.”

“No, I’m pretty sure it’s green.”

“Well, bring me the green dress and then we’ll see if it’s blue.” Lashana sighs.

“Okay…I just thought it was green….”

As Lashana and Rosa continue to talk about gathering clothes, Ariel closes her eyes, steeling herself. She slides down under the water and wills her racing thoughts to settle. The voices around her quiet. This is no time to second-guess her decisions. Life under the sea was lonely, disheartening. She reminds herself of how small it made her feel every time her father refused to listen to her. As long as you live in my ocean, he said to her. In Triton’s ocean, Ariel was viewed as young and naive. She wasn’t allowed to make choices she felt were right. Now, though, she’s on land. Things will be different.

Ariel suddenly shoots up, gasping for air. She’s never felt such a desperate need for oxygen before. She is hit with the realization that she can’t stay underwater the way she used to. It’s not that she didn’t know humans can’t breathe underwater like mermaids do. Ariel just didn’t know it would feel so limiting. Maybe the human world isn’t so free. The thought makes her chest tighten.

Lashana, unaware of Ariel’s internal struggle, reappears and sticks a strange white bar into Ariel’s hands. “There you go. Smells nice, doesn’t it?”

Ariel brings it close and takes a big whiff.
