Upstairs, Lashana leads Ariel into a guest room. She takes Arielâs sailcloth and sits her down in something she calls a bathtub. The tub is cold against Arielâs skin. Lashana didnât explain what Ariel is supposed to do, but Ariel notices the tub looks sort of like a porcelain boat on land. Maybe it needs water?
Suddenly a bucket of steaming water is poured over her head. Ariel gasps in shock. That wasnât quite what she was thinking. The tub is quickly filled with water far hotter than Ariel is used to. She wonders why humans would subject themselves to this. Lashana then steps away to help Rosa, a young housekeeper, prepare the rest of the room.
âShe canât speak at all?â Rosa asks with bewilderment in her voice.
âCan you blame her?â Lashana retorts. âAfter all sheâs been through? Itâs a blessing sheâs not worse off.â
âSuch a faraway look in her eyes.â
âA bit of soap and a scrub and sheâll be good as new.â
Ariel doesnât know what soap is, but she isnât sure sheâd describe herself as very comfortable in this bath. She continues to scan the room, and she is shocked when her eyes lock onto a dead fish painted on the fireplace tiles. Her mind flashes back to the warnings Sebastian gave her. Arielâs earlier excitement slowly starts to melt into a flutter of nerves. Where does she fit into this strange world?
âI need you to bring me the corset and the other underthings from the other room. Oh!â Lashana exclaims. âAnd bring me the blue dress as well.â
âBlue dressâ¦I donât remember a blue dress,â Rosa muses.
âChild, the blue dress thatâs in your room.â
âNo, Iâm pretty sure itâs green.â
âWell, bring me the green dress and then weâll see if itâs blue.â Lashana sighs.
âOkayâ¦I just thought it was greenâ¦.â
As Lashana and Rosa continue to talk about gathering clothes, Ariel closes her eyes, steeling herself. She slides down under the water and wills her racing thoughts to settle. The voices around her quiet. This is no time to second-guess her decisions. Life under the sea was lonely, disheartening. She reminds herself of how small it made her feel every time her father refused to listen to her. As long as you live in my ocean, he said to her. In Tritonâs ocean, Ariel was viewed as young and naive. She wasnât allowed to make choices she felt were right. Now, though, sheâs on land. Things will be different.
Ariel suddenly shoots up, gasping for air. Sheâs never felt such a desperate need for oxygen before. She is hit with the realization that she canât stay underwater the way she used to. Itâs not that she didnât know humans canât breathe underwater like mermaids do. Ariel just didnât know it would feel so limiting. Maybe the human world isnât so free. The thought makes her chest tighten.
Lashana, unaware of Arielâs internal struggle, reappears and sticks a strange white bar into Arielâs hands. âThere you go. Smells nice, doesnât it?â
Ariel brings it close and takes a big whiff.
